  1. We got some really cool art to celebrate 2024's Year of the Dragon EDIT: Here's the Textless Version There are variations of this with "Happy Lunar New Year" in different languages
  2. The rumors just won't stop coming! In addition to a 'Fall Guys' style Sonic the Hedgehog game that we previously reported on, there is now fresh industry gossip alleging that SEGA is working on a Sonic-themed sports title and a Chao game are in development for mobiles. These latest whispers come from 'MbKKssTBhz5' (aka 'Midori') on Twitter, who previously leaked a number of Atlus titles before they were announced last year, and most recently hinted at the aforementioned Fall Guys-style Sonic game. "A Sonic Chao game and new Sonic sports title are both currently in development for mobile devices," wrote Midori, before stating that the Fall Guys title will release by Summer 2024. Apparently, despite the recent acquisition of Rovio, the Angry Birds studio is not currently involved in any such titles, but there are intentions to collaborate in the future. Don't expect some of these games to arrive without any kind of exclusivity, however - Midori noted that the Chao game will launch with Netflix's subscription service (assumedly on all platforms), while the Sports title is destined for Apple Arcade. "And more new Sonic games are coming to Apple Arcade and Netflix later this year," the Twitter user added. Take it all with a huge vat of salt, as per usual rumor-handling protocol - but it definitely seems like SEGA is planning a big year for mobile gamers! Sonic News Tips Credit: DaBigJ Original Post Content: You do not get off of Mr. Hedgehog's ride until he says so. Seems like the mobile-verse of Sonic is expanding rapidly with a new Sports title and a new Chao game(!!) coming to mobile devices! Don't hold out hope for android ports though, as there's a high chance they're gonna be apple exclusive titles. It's very unfortunate that this is the case, but I can only assume SEGA (and Atlus) have some sort of deal with them and Netflix when it comes to mobile games. Perhaps one day these games will hit non-apple devices, but we'll have to see. On the brighter side...maybe, it seems like some collaborative projects are also in the works with Rovio, who had been acquired by SEGA last year. Needless to say it seems like SEGA has a lot in store for mobile gamers, whenever we see them is up in the air. View full story

  4. Word on the grapevine is that Funko will be soon expanding their Sonic the Hedgehog line to include several character yet to receive a vinyl figure incarnation. Sonic Merch News via Twitter reports sources are expecting the release of a large expansion to the Sonic the Hedgehog range, including a modern Super Sonic with Chaos Emeralds, Metal Sonic, Amy Rose, and a special Team Chaotix 3-pack. While no release dates are known yet, be sure to stay tuned to TSS for more on any potential future releases!
  5. If you've got a few hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket, high-end statue designer First 4 Figures has opened pre-orders for their latest Sonic entry, this time featuring Amy Rose! The 14" (35cm) tall resin statue comes in three flavors, all three featuring Amy with her trademark hammer posing in a grassy base. The standard model ($499 USD standard, $459 with pre-order discount) includes just Amy, while the "Exclusive Edition" ($499 / $459) includes a swappable arm showing her holding an Amy Chao. The "Definitive Edition" ($549 / $499) adds an extra layer to the base with several Chao. Though pre-orders are open now, the statue itself isn't expected to ship until Q4 2023.
  6. A brand new preview of Sonic Adventure DX has been published by Gamespot - along with a whole bunch of screenshots! - and with it some more details about the game has come to light, including new minigame modes and Chao raiding improvements lifted from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. The Mission Mode and minigame challenges will be where you'll get to unlock the many Game Gear bonus games included in the Gamecube port. According to the preview: Later in the preview, Gamespot talks about the Chao Gardens in Sonic Adventure DX and they have been vastly improved compared to the Dreamcast original. Some of the new features found in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle have been brought into this prequel release, making it familiar to anyone who is used to how Chao evolve in SA2. Overall, Gamespot thinks SADX is shaping up to be "relatively solid," although it had some concerns over the graphics that "are still a bit rough around the edges... at the moment, the game doesn't match the visual quality seen in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and it even falls a bit short of matching its Dreamcast cousin in some spots...the game's frame rate fluctuates a bit, which can be jarring." However, "judging from what we've seen so far, Sonic Adventure DX is poised to offer a relatively solid dose of retro gaming for those who are up for it." Read the rest of the preview on Gamespot's website - and check out the website's HUGE collection of screenshots captured from their playtest as well.
  7. Sonic X might be the headlining event at this week's World Hobby Fair, but Sonic Team will also be showing off Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Pinball Party at the Japanese expo - along with some fantastic looking goodies and exclusive Chao downloads. On their official World Hobby Fair page, the Sonic game studio revealed that it will have a booth at the show with four games ready to play. On top of Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Pinball Party, Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Advance 2 will also be available. Sonic Advance 2, in particular, will be the focus of a special contest at the event. Winners will get themselves a Sonic Medal (pictured below), while all participants will get a 'Sonic Air Mascot' which kind of looks a bit like an arm band. Stay safe while swimming, kids! On top of this, fans who come armed with a Game Boy Advance will also be able to use the special Chao downloading stations to import exclusive A-Life creatures into Tiny Chao Garden. A Knuckles and Amy Rose-styled Chao are available, but specially for World Hobby Fair it seems like you can also get a 'Glossy Sonic Chao' and 'Glossy Shadow Chao' from the event as well! You'll have to make a hard choice on the day though, as you can only download one Chao at a time to your GBA (and Sonic Team recommends that if you have a Chao already living in your copy of Sonic Advance 1 or 2, you should import them back to Sonic Adventure 2 Battle before taking the trip to the show). That means hardcore fans will either need to take four trips to the Fair or bring four GBA consoles. Best of luck! All attendees to the show will be able to net themselves a special Sonic Mega Collection / Sonic Advance 2 branded tote bag, as well as the chance to take a photo with Sonic and friends. If you live in Japan and plan on going to World Hobby Fair, do let us know what it's like - and have fun!
  8. There's an extra incentive to pick up a copy of Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II on Gamecube for Sonic fans. By playing the game, you can unlock a special Tails-style Chao which you can transfer to your GBA and import back into Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Sonic Team head Yuji Naka revealed the existence of the bonus in an interview with Gamespot, where he also talked about Sonic Mega Collection. And to think he only brought it up because he was asked a simple question: have there been any enhancements to the Episode I side of the game (which is effectively a port of the Dreamcast original)? He later confirmed that users can upload the special Chao into Sonic Adventure 2 Battle using the GBA - Gamecube link cable, as well as save it permanently into copies of Sonic Advance on GBA. Read the full interview on Gamespot here.
  9. We won't have to wait much longer for details on the next Sonic game, as SEGA has announced that it will be unveiling Sonic Team's new project during next month's World Hobby Fair in Japan. The news comes via SEGA's official messaging on the World Hobby Fair website, where the company mentions that it will announce the next Sonic game at the show. No other details - not even platforms - were shared, but there are rumours that this could be the first time Sonic will appear on Microsoft's Xbox console. SEGA will also be showing off Super Monkey Ball 2 at the event, as well as a rare Chao download for attendees. Plenty of special souvenirs will also be able to be purchased, so that's nice for those with fat wallets too! World Hobby Fair takes place in Japan on July 13 and 14. We'll let you know what news comes from it as soon as it happens.
  10. SEGA's next mobile phone game for its Japan-exclusive subscription service focuses on the adorable Chao A-Life system. 'Nakayoshi Chao' (なかよしチャオ), which loosely translates to '[A] Good Friend Chao', has players taking care of a 3D animated Chao as if they were a Tamagotchi. It's a game built specially for the DoCoMo iMode 504i series of phones, which is the latest model and can produce 3D graphics. The Chao can interact with you using detailed gestures, facial expressions and voices. If you play with the Chao and take good care of it, some of its friends may come to play as well. You can build a little happy family of multiple Chao, and also redecorate the Chao's room as well. Sounds like a cute little distraction, after a series of parlour and leisure games featuring Sonic. Give the blue blur a break and spend some time with your A-Life friends. Source: Sonic Team
  11. We're not entirely sure if this isn't an early April Fools gag or not, but if it's not we're incredibly jealous of this special Sonic Advance/Sonic Adventure 2 Battle download being offered at Japan's GameJam2 festival, where Sonic Team is providing fans with a special Knuckles Chao! Attendees to the game festival can download the data for this limited edition themed critter from certain kiosks, assumedly to their GBA copies of Sonic Advance. From there, you can take your handheld home and import the Fighting Freak Chao straight into your Gamecube's Sonic Adventure 2 Battle via the Chao Garden. If you don't have a copy of Sonic Advance, but you have a GBA and want to take Knuckles Chao home with you, these download kiosks will also download a temporary version of Tiny Chao Garden with the Knuckles Chao onto your GBA's flash memory. The GameJam2 festival is currently taking place in Tokyo's International Forum on 30th and 31st March 2002. SEGA is also offering various Sonic Team-themed gifts for attendees as well, including a Sonic and AiAi (Super Monkey Ball) themed tote bag and PuyoPuyo... ball... things. Source: Sonic Team
  12. The latest in the line of Chao Breeding come from the depths of the beautiful Sonic Advance. It comes in the form of 'Tiny Chao Garden', and is a much more sophisticated version of the Chao Adventure game found on the VMUs we all knew and loved (but wasn't very good). Along with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the GameCube, Sonic Advance will take the place of the VMU, and rightly so. Prepare for the greatest Chao breeding in the palm of your hand... You can start raising Chao straight away, as an egg is already waiting for you in the game regardless of whether you connect it to Sonic Adventure 2 Battle or not. When you begin, you are taken to a garden that looks much like a forest. This is the standard Chao Garden; as your Chao grows up and you become more experienced you will begin to unlock new ones, including a pinball-style garden, with your Chao bouncing all over the shop. In essence, this is a bigger version of Chao Adventure, as many familiar elements can be found here. You can change the name of your Chao as soon as it hatches and if you leave it idle it will just walk up and down the garden waiting for your care. In Chao Adventure you had a little game to tide yourself over, while getting fruit for your Chao. This time there are two mini-games to play when you start off, and you play for rings instead of fruit. You'll find that rings are the basis for everything here, as you need these to BUY your Chao food to eat. Be careful what you buy though, as some fruit may raise certain stats of your Chao's skills that you don't want. Test out all the food first - when you get really good, you can buy the toys and big items for 1000 rings, such as the trumpet. Obviously, you'll never get that amount by just playing the mini-games, so luckily you can use the rings you collect in the main Sonic Advance adventure too. Hoorah! There is the worry that since Sonic Advance releases before SA2 Battle, you'll be able to raise your Chao to the max before the Gamecube release, then transfer your Chao to SA2 Battle and win all the races as soon as you have the game. Well, I don't think Sonic Team are silly enough to forget about that, and although I'm not sure whether it will be the case either, there is one thing stopping that rumour - level-ups. Your standard skills (Fly, Power, Swim, Run) are shown in levels now instead of a simple number (up to 999). So, if SA2 Battle is incorporating this level-up feature too, it makes the whole situation a whole lot less likely to be manipulated. Other things to mention: your Chao has the tendency to say the coolest things as it learns to speak. And remember to feed your Chao regularly - there is a meter called 'Belly' telling you how hungry it is - and look after its 'Mood' (how moody it is) as well.
  13. We recently learned that Sonic Adventure 2 Battle will connect with Sonic Advance for portable Chao raising. But today we have more details on what exactly that entails, as well as screenshots of the special Chao Garden mode in action. According to a report on IGN, once you're done looking after your A-Life blob in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (which will assumedly work in a similar fashion to Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast) you can carry your Chao over to a pod that will allow you to transfer the virtual pet to a copy of Sonic Advance. A Game Boy Advance with a copy of Sonic Advance must be plugged into the Gamecube using a communication cable. After you've moved it onto your handheld, you can raise your Chao on the move in what's being called the Petit Chao Garden. Much more advanced than Chao Adventure 2 on Sega's Visual Memory Unit, on GBA you can purchase seeds and fruit using rings collected in the main Sonic Advance adventure. You can also grab goodies for your Chao by playing two little mini-games in the Petit Chao Garden, called 'Okashi Mekucchao' and 'Janken Shoot'. Both Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Sonic Advance are planned to be released in Japan on December 20. Check out the screenshots of the Petit Chao Garden - as well as some new screens from SA2 Battle's Chao Gardens - below. Via IGN
  14. Interesting news - it sounds like Sonic Adventure 2 on the Gamecube will interact in some ways with Sonic Advance on Nintendo's Game Boy Advance. From what we understand, this will come in the form of a unique way to raise Chao on the move. According to IGN Pocket, the Gamecube version of SA2 will feature Chao Races, similar to those seen in the original Dreamcast version. However, to help grow and raise your Chao, you can connect a GBA to the Gamecube using a special communication cable, and use the handheld to boost the stats of your little blobby pet. On the Dreamcast, players can raise the stats of their Chao using their Visual Memory Units - they can download their pets onto the memory card and play Chao Adventure 2 on the digital screen whilst out of the house. It sounds like this will be a similar feature on GBA and Gamecube, but hopefully with the power of the new portable console we may see this 'Tiny Chao Garden' offer more elaborate features. 15. Sonic Adventure 2's Chao raising features are pretty cool and all, but there are some of us who don't want to endure the pain of slowly breeding the right kind of creature to win races with (and thus get Emblems). Sometimes the process of getting that NiGHTS Chao or other special A-Life buddy involves too much trial and error. Well give three cheers to Alessandro Sanasi, who has written a brand new Chao Editor program for Sonic Adventure 2. The program works by being installed on your Dreamcast's VMU, and once booted can modify the statistics, appearance and personality of any Chao loaded into the memory card via SA2's Chao Garden. About the only thing you can't do with this program is upload your mutated creations to the online Sonic Adventure 2 gamepage on your Dreamcast to share with friends - Sanasi's program includes an identifier that is caught by SEGA's CGI script upon upload, preventing it from being shared. You can grab yourself the editor by going here.
  16. Sonic Team has launched the online Chao-sharing functionality of Sonic Adventure 2, a month after the game's initial Dreamcast release. Now, you can log on to the SA2 Dreamcast page from the disc and upload your Chao to the Chao Daycare. Your friends can pick them up from you there. As well as share Chao, you can also use the Chao Black Market from the online site too. Get sharing!
  17. We knew that Chao Gardens were set to return in Sonic Adventure 2, but we've never seen anything like this before! It looks like you'll be able to now raise Good and Evil Chao! The latest update to the official Sonic Team website shows the image of an angelic and demonic Chao, that can apparently be raised by any of the characters in the game. There will even be Hero and Dark Chao Gardens, so you can make them feel right at home. A lot of other improvements are included in the Chao Raising element, too, including new items for your Chao to use (like TVs) and new races for them to participate in. Check out the screenshots here!

  19. First 4 Figures announced on Twitter today that they are looking into doing a series of statues featuring Chao. While there are no actual announcements, they provided some quick-and-dirty concept art for a Dark Garden statue featuring three dark Chao including a Shadow Chao. Chao were most recently featured in First 4 Figures’ Amy Rose Definitive Edition statue, but have not been prominently featured in their own statue. If you are interested in the potential line of high end (and likely very expensive) Chao statues, you can let First 4 Figures know via this form. Thanks to Hyper Metal Sonic for the news tip!

  24. New Sonic Adventure 2 screenshots from Official Dreamcast Magazine reveal some details on Chao raising. Instead of animals being freed from robots in order to nurture your Chao, you will find odd little rods. Apparently these will be compatible somehow with your virtual pet. So, where have the animals gone? Don't fret, Sonic Team haven't taken them out of the Chao-raising process - that would be just silly. Instead, Sonic has to whistle (!) near bushes or bins in order to grab the little critters' attentions and pick them up within stages. The ODM article also shares some information on the new tricks Sonic can perform. The blue blur will now be able to grind on rails (but you knew that) AND swing on bars! Like a true athlete!
  25. Word on the grapevine is that Funko will be soon expanding their Sonic the Hedgehog line to include several character yet to receive a vinyl figure incarnation.
