Sonic Retro - the truth behind their masks!

Hello everyone.

This thread is dedicated to showing what Sonic Retro really is. Do you guys remember Sonic 2 HD? That's right. They put a big countdown timer and stated they were releasing an alpha build. Since x-mas. When the day arrives, January 16th 2011, all there's in their blog are a few screenshots and 11 seconds of actual gameplay. After 3 years. Not only that: they made many people get involved but, without warning, changed the project into a closed one. Retro, of course, did almost nothing – the game is still there in the community section.

If you go there and attempt to sign-in, be sure to follow a process to be approved as a trial member, answering 3 dumb questions, and then you'll be promoted to a "trial member", where you have "to prove you aren't a douche" (that means, that you agree with the views of the moderators and members there no matter what).

That's what happened with a trial member there, named "Mythrill". This very same member posted a thread at the official Sega forums, that have a much simpler registration scheme – which Sonic Retro called on IRC as a "kindergarten" forum. In a site second only to Sega. The topic was originally rated 5 stars, but it was deleted (not even locked) without any explanation.

This same member tried posting this at TSSZ, a site of which they state themselves Retro is suspicious of hacking, but not only his "newsflash" never got heard of – the moderated post criticizing Sonic Retro was deleted, the diastrous news about Sonic 2 HD got deleted from the main page and was replaced with favorable news of "Sonic Classic" – clearly a Sonic Retro project. You can see the favorable news here: http://www.tssznews.com/2011/01/19/close-to-completion-new-sonic-classic-screenshots-released/. Blackmail, much?

Around two or three days after topic deletion, Aaron Webber, worker from the Sega PR division, and known as a forum administrator of the Sega forums, known as Ruby Eclipse "wished the best for the project, not as a Sega employee, but as a fan" – his own words:

Posting not as someone from SEGA, but rather as a fan, I wanted to personally wish you guys the best of luck with this project.

While I'm not too familiar with the past life of this project up to now, it does look like a lot of people in the gaming community are looking at this in a pretty positive light. In that regard, it does a good service both for what you guys want to accomplish, and for Sonic as a gaming icon.

Of course, the most important part now is buckling down and getting it out there. Take your time where you need to - even for as much as many people would like to play it right now, getting it as close to perfect as possible will also make a difference long-term. As was evidenced earlier, just make sure to try and communicate that as soon as possible, if it's going to take a little bit longer than expected. People will forgive you if the end result can live up to (most) expectations.

Since these topics are always prone to the edition of administrators and unexplainable deletions, I got them all saved for your viewing pleasure. You probably will think these files are very interesting. Aaron Webber's words on Sonic Retro's forum – second only to Sega, of course – are on page 43 - 44 of the topic discussion. To see the forum threads,uUnzip them and click on the html file to have access to all messages.

Ok, so the files are, in this order:

1. Backup from the deleted forum thread of the official Sega post. Many messages were lost.

2. Amusing IRC chat were you can see more of how lovely Sonic Retro staff is.

3. Backup Sonic 2 HD's discussion thread – you know, just in case.
