Preview: Sonic Super Digest #12

I love you baby, but face it she’s…Topaz…Mary Garnet…oh, I don’t know.

To break up the flow of Worlds Unite a bit before we inevitably jump into the upcoming fire, let’s take a look at the future that is the past. Newsarama has released a preview for Sonic Super Digest #12. To recap on the crossover event, parts of Worlds Collide are being reprinted in this edition, amongst other tales from the vast library of Archie Sonic stories over the years. Most notable feature of this issue, however, is the Sonic Comic Origins story focused on our resilient traitor Snively. See how he worked with Eggman, turned tail for his own gain and ended up where he is in “The Traitor”.

First a game oriented reboot, then more focus on the game-verse including spin-off, making non-SatAM animated characters canon and now MADONNA? I was surprised when the Sonic Band appeared in the comics as Mina’s band but this is a head turner.

What in the name Billie Jean have they done with Madonna!? I know a redesign was expected, since they took that route with Breezie, but this? It seem that Flynn has a thing for turning obscure Sonic females into villains. Let’s hope Tiara doesn’t become an Egg Boss or have any involvement with the Eggman Empire. She should’ve been a member of the Sonic band along with Max, Mach, and Sharps.

Madonna!? More like Calhoun.

    Who said she was a villain? She’s a G.U.N. operative, they’re the good(ish) guys.

Though at first, I thought they brought back Topaz from Sonic X, because “Madonna”looks a bit like her, and storywise, she might as well be Topaz-in-name-only. Oh Well what do you expect from a character whose sole conceptual premise was “let’s make Sonic even cooler by making the biggest female pop artist of the 80’s into his girlfriend”. It goes hand in hand with being inspired by Mickey Mouse, making his sneakers red because of Michael Jackson and being sooo much into Americanism, that not only his color scheme is a blatant targeted appeal, but apparently Sonic’s attitude was based on Bill Clinton’s?

Ah man if there is one thing I’m glad Sonic Team and SEGA in general got rid of is the company being completely westaboo for American pop culture. I mean yeah, that was the whole reason SEGA existed in the first place, but man did it ever get out of hand in the 90’s.

Wait…they still use pop music on their game trailers. Drat!

My bad. I thought she was working tor Snively without reading the full page.

They should’ve at least kept her design faithful to her concept art, instead of a Sgt. Calhoun expy.

Then again, this may not be Madonna (since it’s a semi-common name) and the whole blonde human female thing is just a sheer coincidence.

The problem with the original Madonna is that she’s just a blank slate, and her original design was pretty generic.

Well they could’ve kept her original face, like in this video:
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU27IY5KZI8

Gave her the same style of clothes as New Sally, and made her into an action girl (if this is really Madonna)

It’s more like Flynn created a character who is a reference to three characters ^^ (he confirmed she had three references, but not who were the references exactly) at once :
    – Madonna, like everybody knows (First Name + the very basic premise of the design)
    – Topaz, for the role and maybe her personality ?
    – Mary Garnet for her last name (she is from an obscure document)

For Tiara, she’s off-limit :p And I’m not sure the “Sonic Band” could work well in the actual continuity of the comics, but that’s another topic…

How do you know Tiara is off limits? If this limited only to Archie, or is no one allowed to ever use Tiara and she’ll never see any real appearance in anything?

After the whole Xtreme thing, SEGA pretty much tried to erase all existence of it from the face of the Earth so it wouldn’t shock me if they were all “No characters from that!”.

SEGA really needs to get over the whole “Sonic’s image” complex and swallow their ego.

Flynn said that in a Q/A in bumbleking forum (his own forum). He only said she was off-limit and he could not disclosed why, or something like that.

IXIS NAUGUS?! I… I swear he was a part of the whole legal thing! What’s he DOING there?!

He is a satam character, so he isn’t a part of the legal thing. And he was in the very first issue of the reboot:)

Oh, heh, my bad. Seems like a strange addition all the same though, doesn’t really fit the style of the new world.
