Chances are if you’ve kept your finger on the pulse of the Sonic community over the past half decade, you’ll have encountered this character – SEGA’s Digital Brand Manager, Ken Balough. Ken is probably best known for being one of the most prominent spokespeople representing SEGA during the promotion of both Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episodes 1 and 2, for trailblazing fan engagement with the SEGA Community team, as well as his mean sense of humour.
Yesterday, Ken announced in a statement on the SEGA forums that he would be leaving his position at SEGA to join the team at Sony Playstation.
Amongst other things mentioned in the post, Ken praised the passion of the Sonic fans:
The Sonic fans are the best I’ve experienced – passionate, intelligent, with an unrivalled love of the franchise. I have been privileged to get to know you, and hear your thoughts, and talk to you personally when given the opportunity. There are so many of you I want to thank. You guys are really one of a kind. Continue to encourage everyone at SEGA to make better games – it’s really fuel for us when we see, or hear you guys excited.
On behalf of all of us here at The Sonic Stadium and the SSMB, we wish to thank Ken for five memorable years of service to the community, and congratulate him on the stellar representation he has provided for SEGA and the Sonic franchise.
Ken, we wish you all the best in your new role – buena suerte!
Here are a couple of our favourite Ken moments…

Kinda sad that i didnt even knew who this guy is….
Oh well…
I don’t remember either of those interviews, although I remember the trailer in the first one. I think I’m the first to comment!
Or not.
Now I can only pray for Sonic 4: Episode 3…
So people might hate me for this but: SONY PLAYSTATION 4 WITH ADDED SPRINGS DLC
TRAITOR!FREAKING TRAITOR! I can understand leaving for most other pubs and devs….BUT SONY!? respect lost
Well, if I were in the field and I was able to take a job with one of the few biggest corporations out there, hell yeah I’d move on up.
Best of luck to him I say, sad to see him go.
I’m sad to see Ken go, he’s been so involved in the Sonic community for the past 5 years. And even though I personally am not a fan of the Sonic 4 series, he really put a lot of his time and effort into those games, trying to make them the best they could possibly be.And I always loved those couple “Ben Kalough from Sega of Antarctica” videos. 😛
Good luck at Sony Ken! Hopefully someone worthy enough fills your shoes.
As I understand it that wasn’t actually him.
That’s a shame. Ken was a real cool cat. I’m happy he is going to another one of my favorite companys.
Seen his name on Sonic Retro and Wikipedia.
Eh. I don’t really care.
^^ This!
What about it? LMAO
I suddenly feel bad for not respecting the Sonic 4 titles all too much. He tried so hard to make the fans pleased, but all we gave him in return was more complaints.
Also, does this mean there won’t be an episode 3? On another note, at least we know he will be successful because I hear good things coming from the PS4, and I’m sure he won’t let anything screwy happen at Sony when it comes to Sonic. *cough* *Sonic 06* *cough* And if you don’t know what “buena suerte” means it means good luck. Best of luck Ken!
oh there will be an Episode 3 its just that Ken won’t be around to promoting it.Ken is kinda like the middle man (or Liason) between us (the fans) and Sonic Team (the people who made Sonic 4 Episodes 1 & 2).
Oh, okay. Thank you!
Ahem…the word is “farewell”.
Sad to see him go… *nudges guy beside me* (who was that guy again? T_T)
Sad to see him go. He was a good sport. A spokesperson for Sega as you truly imagined it (sorry I couldn’t resist) 😉
Sad to see anyone go, but just as the series has aged, grown, let things go, and brought new things in, a similar situation occurs in the business department.I’m sure he’ll still be a supporter, and I wish him the best of luck.
Now the question is, who will try to fill into the shoes he left?
Retirement – as you truly imagined it.
Enter…Ben Kalough Acting brand manager 😉 lolz. You have my vote 😉 The New Sega @Antarctica O=D
I bid you adieu, Balough. You will be missed.
Dang.. we could’ve used his energy and positivity to promote Episode 3
Don’t know why he chose to go to Sony.. PS4 is going to tank.
.. Maybe SEGA aren’t telling us something
*goes to a corner to curl up and worry*
“PS4 is going to tank.” NO IT’S NOT YOU F***ING FOOL!! There is so many positive things about PS4, Sonic should be on the PS4, and Wii U. I’m not including Microsofts new rumoured Xbox system, because Microsoft just likes to alienate their consumers.
Another thing. The next Xboxs isn’t going to be developer friendly at all to developers (Including Sonic Team, Dimps, and Sumo Digital).
Wait.
Wasn’t this the fella with the tails beard?
Because that was pretty awesome.
It’d be a good idea to go to Sony. Think about it: SEGA told Ken to leave to Sony, and find a way to contact Sonic Team about a new Sonic game announcement for the PS4, and gives Sonic Team the time to fix out the bugs and glitches found: Making sure Sonic Team doesn’t make the same mistake they did with 06.
I think its safe to say this. The Case of Ken Balough…..*Shades*……. Is closed.
“YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!”
^ And this right here above me, is a complete dick who has no idea what he’s talking about.
In case you weren’t joking…
This man does not represent us /Sonic fans.
I’ll just say this. He’s leaving his employment at SEGA to move over to SONY. That shows how much his appericiation for his position was.
I mean, I understand if he’s looking to be paid a higher wage, believe me I do, but some things are just more important than that. If I were to be brought on by a publisher, be it SEGA, SONY, Nintendo, or even Microsoft I wouldn’t just abandon them just because I’d have a slightly better opportunity elsewhere. Why would I if I truly enjoyed what I was doing. Exactly, there’d be no reason to leave.
Maybe I’m looking at this the wrong way, but I don’t find it right to just walk out like that. In my opinion that shows a great lack of respect to my employer, my team, and my fans.
Just my opinion, now everyone bash me.
I’d like to correct something.
You do realize that the whole “Sonic 4″ thing is nothing but a hoax to convince you that SEGA is listening to the fans and that the fans have SOME input into the direction of the series.
There is no Sonic 4. This game was meant to be SEGA’s answer to New Super Mario Bros., not the holy grail of your forgotten childhood. There is even junk data in the game that has it’s real name on file. SEGA only slapped on the title because they wanted a piece of the nostalgic market boom that was going on at the time. I mean seriously?
WHO WAITS 16 YEARS FOR A GAME?!
The original Sonic Team left SEGA in 1999! Anyone who knows how to make a Genesis game left years ago, so no matter who gets fired or who is leaving for what, whatever fantasies you have of a “perfect Sonic 4″ died looong before the game even came out.
Finally……he was a brand manager!! For SEGA of AMERICA! He would have been lucky to even see Iizuka-san, let alone give any form of meaningful input. All he was in charge of is analytics and press, and he did a good job at that.
My work is done here. Now to tell the Shenmue fans that there is no Santa Claus !
We’ll first of all Chris, Ken was only a spokesperson. So really he had nothing to do with the games. 2nd, you need to chill out. Its just a game. You’re just making yourself into looking like a dick over something you can’t even change. Your voice means nothing to SEGA. Sonic really isn’t that great to get riled up about in the first place. I’ve been a fan since I was 5 back in 2002, and now I’m starting to drift away because of it getting to be more child-friendly as I start to get older. Its a shame really. At least I can draw him amazingly still.
Why would I try to correct your comment, you’ve done more than enough to make me point and laugh.
Chris… you need to get off the internet for a loooong time….
Yeah! I just loved standing upside down defying gravity in a loop and flying horizontally across the screen. But screw an original plot, god knows the story is totally more important.
We realized it, we just realized why it was scrapped.
I think it’s dumb for Sonic to have a girlfriend at all. He doesn’t seem like that kinda guy. He’s the one dude who DOESN’T need a romantic partner since EVERYONE is always so desperate in every freakin book, game, show or movie. lol
And you realize now that you’ve called Unleashed worse than 06, people are going to take you even less seriously than before? You might not care… except I don’t see the point in commenting if that’s the case. o0
Sonic Unleashed was worse than Sonic 06.
You should do stand-up, because that’s the funniest joke I’ve heard in a while.
06 did it right. Game play and story wise.
2006’s basic handling may have been somewhat decent, but that aside, the gameplay was horribly butchered. And the plot is one of the worst excuses for narrative in the entire series. The only other storyline that comes close to matching 2006’s crappiness is ShTH.
People just hated the human romance, but fans are too dumb to realize Sonic had a human girlfriend in his concept stages in 91.
Um, no. Our main problems with the story is that it’s riddled with plot holes, it’s presented in an awkward, clashing art direction that’s trying to do photorealism and cartoony anthropomorphic characters and still try and have the tone of the game series, and Sonic (the guy whose name is in the goddamn title) is an extremely bland protagonist without a shred of character in him aside from “Just smile!!!11″ who ends up being upstaged by Shadow, and to a lesser extent, Silver. The kiss scene was just the cherry on top of the turd sundae.
And will you shut up about Sonic having a human girlfriend in the conceptual stages of Sonic 1 already? That doesn’t mean jack, since she never made it PAST the conceptual stages. There’s a difference between “she was supposed to be in this game” and “she was in this game”. And you have the nerve to call other people stupid, it seems to me the only one devoid of any intelligence here is you.
What does that have to do with Ken?
I think SonicWarrior has a point.
His lack of knowledge on springs and speed boosters might be because of what he has and hasn’t heard. Walk in his shoes and find out what he was and wasn’t able toreceive in terms of fan reactions. It’s not like his job is to surf the net completely. Maybe he was busy paying his bills.
Some of these things ARE surprising since they were said so late. He also could’ve just been surprised such an insignificant thing was such a big deal to people even AFTER the major upgrade.
And who DIDN’T laugh at the music complaint? It’s not like he has anything to do with that control over that. The music was fine. lol
You realize he took Aaron Webber’s place right? Webber was the original guy… So either way Ken can’t take all the blame. And I recall Webber being a popular guy.
So…. you got a problem with Midgets? Or are you saying he had really tiny feet?
Perhaps, perhaps not.Everyone brings something to the table, regardless if someone appreciates it or not.
Jeeze. You are the stereotypical Sonic fan that everyone hates.
it’s presented in an awkward, clashing art direction that’s trying to do photorealism and cartoony anthropomorphic characters and still try and have the tone of the game serious
Correcting a typo.
And instead of actually trying to defend his position, or better yet, NOT respond, Chris K. proves his immaturity not only by being extremely pretentious in acting like he’s the only Sonic fan with common sense (when in actuality, he’s not), but also by resorting to name-calling and childish insults when someone calls him out.
Don’t change, Chris.
I agree with you.If he really liked his position at SEGA he would have never left. But sometimes the green is more important than the blue….most of the time unfortunately.
