Nintendo Power: 9.0 for Colors Wii, 7.5 for DS

I get a raw deal here every day for “NOT LIKING ANYTHING,” but it’s more like “I don’t like mediocre/bad games.”  SEGA feels the same way.  With Sonic 4 wallowing in “Averagetown” on Metacritic, Sonic Colors is the horse that everybody, including myself, is betting on.

You’ve seen Dreadknux’s awesome playthroughs of Planet Wisp and Sweet Mountain and you’ve read how much I want the game.  The first review came in from NGamer, who gave it an 86%.  Nintendo Power is second to review Colors and has thrown it a glowing mark of 9.0 for the Wii version and a 7.5 for the DS version.

Now, Nintendo Power is known for pulling punches with reviews (usually sugarcoating the crap out of everything to give just about every game a “decent” score) and has given the now de-listed Sonic Unleashed and Sonic & the Black Knight 8s in the past, but the reviewer for Colors insists that this game is where it’s at:

I wrote the Sonic Colors review for NP, and for what it’s worth, I didn’t review any of those previous titles. If I had, I probably would have given Sonic and the Secret Rings a 7.0 and Sonic Unleashed a 6.5. (I haven’t played through Sonic and the Black Knight yet.) I’m not saying that to throw my colleagues under the bus–reviews are just one person’s opinion–but to help folks calibrate where that 9.0 for Sonic Colors is coming from. It’s a hell of a lot of fun, and I think you guys are really going to enjoy it.

From what I’ve seen and played, I’ll take his word for it.  November needs to get here quicker.  If you have this issue of NP, feel free to share the details with us in the comments section below.

And, oh wow, reviews are just “one person’s opinion?”  What a novel concept.  Did you guys know that?

  1. OHHHHH YEEAAAAHHHHH!!!

  2. FUCK YEAH!

  3. TheHumbleFellow says:

    *GASP* Brad actually LIKES something?!

Is it a coincidence that it’s REALLY cold where I am? Or has hell frozen over?

  4. I know when to give props.

If I truly didn’t like anything, I’d do everybody all a favor and leave the site.

  5. Hey, Joe, uncalled for. Enjoy never posting here again.

  6. had a feeling the DS one wouldn’t be great

  7. Alright, Dimps really should take a new step with their Sonic games.
Anyway, I’m glad you’re be able to finally enjoy a 3D Sonic game again after 7 years Mr. Flick.
    Looking forward to it.

  8. Colors is the real deal for me. I’m really hoping that Colors turns out to be a more enjoyable game then Sonic 4, I really do.

  9. krazeeKidd102 says:

The DS version only has a 7.5!?

    NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Oh and I’m sure that the DS version will be just as great, too. :) Its just being overshadow by its consoles brother.

  11. @ krazeeKidd102:
7.5 is a good score. I fail to see the problem :-S

  12. Nintendo Power is so “Permisive” with the scores, i gonna wait until the most awful pages gives the real score (IGN, Metacritic, Gamespot, and blabla)
An example, nintendo power give a sonic unleashed a 8.0, sonic and the black knight, a 7.0. or something like that.

  13. Charmy Fails To See Logic says:

On your thinking Shadz, 7.1 is also a good score. Obviously the article writer doesn’t agree…

  14. lol Even the harshest guy on TSS likes it. But why wouldn’t he? It’s Sonic COLORS! Just the title sounds “fun”. XD

But what was up with the guy being quoted saying something about giving Secret Rings a higher score than Unleashed? It must depend on which version of Unleashed he’s talking about because.. c’mon, it’s Secret Rings. XD

    @sonicfan1984

Well it’s already more enjoyable to WATCH than Sonic 4, so it should be more enjoyable to PLAY too right? XD (especially since you have to watch it while playing it so Colours is already top dog in that comparison. XD)

I hope Colors at least gets a 9.5 or one 10/10 somewhere! I’d hate to see it be seen as equal to Sonic 4! Not that I’m hatin’ on Sonic 4, but compared to Colors… Sonic 4 isn’t all that special. So if Sonic 4 got a 9 then Colors needs a 10 somewhere. >w> lol

  15. Oh good, two really good Sonic games in a short space of time!

  16. HELL YEAH.

    SONIC REBORN

  17. krazeeKidd102 says:

    @Shadzter

Sonic Rush+Good Level Design+Sonic Unleashed Moveset+Powerups=Sonic Colors DS.

Tell me that doesn’t deserve at least an 8.5

  18. krazeeKidd102 says:

    @Shadzter

Besides, 7.5 is good, but not anything remarkable. Everyone knows that anything below 6.0 is fail.

  19. I’m a little confused, Nintendo Power usually sugar coats reviews. This only got a 9?

Also disappointed in Sonic Rush 3 (lol sonic colors ds).

  20. @ krazeeKidd102

7.5/10 isn’t a bad score at all. If you are as crazy about Sonic as many of the commenters are on TSS then consider it a must buy.

  21. @ krazeeKidd102

and actually play the finished product before making assumptions on what score a game should deserve. Not every formula works when it’s taken off the paper.

  22. HELL YES!

  23. cobanermani456 says:

9.0 is totally good enough for me. If it’s a tie with Super Mario Bros Wii and just half a point below Mario Galaxy 2 then I am still pleased. Watch out Mario!
Sonic is now the comeback kid

  24. cobanermani456 says:

I’m so excited. This game’s score tied with Super Mario Bros Wii and is just half a point below Mario Galaxy 2. WATCH OUT MARIO!
    Sonic’s the comeback kid

  25. I swear a lot of you probably just read the title then posted your comment, without even taking a glance at the quote. The guy who reviewed Sonic Colours was one of the harsher Nintendo Power reviewers. He clearly said that if he had reviewed the other games he would have given Unleashed a 6.5 and Secret Rings a 7.

And you guys also seem to forget about the NGamer review as well. A site that has been known for giving Sonic games low scores (heck they gave Sonic Adventure DX 38%), giving this game an 86%, which by the standards of NGamer means “gaming excellence”.

  26. ShadowMasterX5 says:

@Brad Yeah, Sonic Colors is the horse I’m betting on as well :) , hopefully they have Super Sonic playable in the levels =P

  27. If Slingerland (Brad) likes the game, and him being one of the more critical folks around TSS and SSMB, that says quite a lot.

And for this game to get a 9/10 this is something of a must-play to see if they’re right.

“And, oh wow, reviews are just “one person’s opinion?” What a novel concept. Did you guys know that?”

Yeah, I knew that. But I do know of a thing called being overcritical that we should all watch out for, myself included. Nothing worse than overanalyzing something to the point that you can’t enjoy things ya know. But all’s good.

  28. Awesome! Prepare for the return of our blue hero!! I knew Sega could do it! :D

  29. Brianzilla2004 says:

Considering Dimps isn’t the developer, I think that Sonic Colors has an excellent chance of being vastly superior to Sonic 4. Then again, after recently popping in Sonic Unleashed and attempting to play it, I found myself disgusted by just how horrendous that game really was… Colors looks like Unleashed 2. Not all that excited about it, even if it were on a console I owned. With online play and Metal Sonic added to the roster, I’m actually more interested in Free Riders.

  30. ‘ I get a raw deal here every day for “NOT LIKING ANYTHING,” but it’s more like “I don’t like mediocre/bad games.” ‘

Dang straight man, I know how it feels. I can’t stand it when reviewers get bashed. (unless they just intentionally go out of their way to make a game look like a piece of crap *coughchoughIGN’scoughreviewcoughofcoughSonicUnleashedcoughcough*)

Anyway, this is terrific, Sonic is back and the reviews of 4 (for the most part) and now this prove it. Let’s just hope Free Riders is just as good… but considering the fact that Microsoft doesn’t even want people reviewing Kinect makes the whole deal look horrible. I seriously hope I’ll have enough money for this after I have to pay $120 for Rock Band 3 with the keyboard!

  31. KarlaTheHedgehog says:

    *le gasp*
    This.
    Is.
    AWESOME!

This is the first time i see a review like THIS!

i swear to God i want november to be RIGHT NOW, because that game is the most epic one i’ve ever seen in my life!

and now im gonna end this with something more modern:

    HELL YEA WOOT!!!!!!!!

  32. Sonic 4 is not fully released. Only one episode was. I am not going to judge the game on one episode.

  33. Mhm, mhm. The only intelligent way to make Super Sonic playable in levels during a 3D game is to simply get the Chaos Emeralds in the story of the game (if there are special stages) and/or have him be unlocked after being seen in Story Mode (in this case would be at the climatic ending).

But imagine Super Sonic in levels of a 3D games, especially with gameplay like Colors. XD It’d be hard. Plus… imagine it… “Super DRILL!!!” XD
