SEGA’s Webber Details Sonic 4 Difficulty, Homing Attack

Aaron Webber joined the folks over at SEGA Addicts for a podcast and a Sonic 4 discussion started amongst conversation about SEGA’s other upcoming titles, like Valkyria Chronicles.  He fielded a lot of e-mail questions regarding the game and took on two of them that many people are wanting to hear more about: difficulty and the homing attack.

When asked about difficulty, Webber responded that Sonic 4‘s difficulty will be on par with the three games that came before it.  Like in any of those games, your tropical/green zone will be the easiest and ramp up from there.  On the bosses, Webber commented, “Some of the boss battles near the end gave me a real challenge and I died quite a few times.”  Depending on how easy or hard you thought the original trilogy to be, that could go either way.

When the homing attack was brought into the discussion, Aaron responded to the move’s critics, whom have labeled it an “instant win button.”  As one of those critics, after noticing how piss-easy boss battles and gameplay were due to the move, I was happy to hear Webber discuss detractors from spamming it.  Webber details that “when you do a homing attack and hit a target, there is a quick momentafterward when you have no control. It’s during that instance when couldget hit.”  He provided an example from the first Eggman boss battle in Splash Hill, where using the homing attack to hit Eggman’s ship will leave you momentarily exposed to the wrecking ball.

It’s good to know the HA isn’t the easy way out afterall. I found the bosses quite hard in the older games so I’m looking forward to the challenge.

I posted this on the Sonic 4 forum two weeks ago. I didn’t think it was big enough for the news page myself, but did think it was a bit interesting.

I think it’s pretty important. There’s a lot of discussion going on regarding the homing attack and its place in the game.I think it cleans up that discussion.

I hope this information puts endless flame wars and debates to rest. Honestly, I am tired of people complaining about the newer Sonic games (I enjoyed them, and yes, that includes Sonic 2006, so no hating, please) and I still can’t believe the fact that anyone would complain about Sonic 4. I have been playing Sonic games since the first one on the Genesis came out in 1991, and I never have complained on how the series has changed or improved over time. Besides, 2010 is going to be a good year for Sonic, and people should be happy, because SEGA is making the new Sonic game that they want.

I have no doubt in my mind that this game will be nothing short of incredible, it’s funny how this Sonic game is getting the love of the normal gamers, yet the fanbase hates it. It’s like the exact opposite of the other games.

Well I can see where he was going with the debates on sonic 4 and such.

Also haters gonna hate.

Im a huge fan andi love this game so far.

I would think better from Mr. Webber, how could he not know Sonic #25 was the sonic CD addaption

@Edge: Ooooooo, the forbidden Sonic zooooonneee…

Be careful, you don’t want to get flamed from merely bringing it up.

Well, it’s good to know that the HA does have some sort of penalty for spamming it.As for the difficulty, I think it was a bit too vague, because I found all three to have varying difficulties. In Sonic 1, I thought it could be pretty tough the whole way through. In Sonic 2, the difficulty starts getting steadily higher. In Sonic 3 and K, I actually found the difficulty to be jumping around quite a bit.But that’s most likely because the levels were very varied in my opinion, and the game having to be split in two.

I like knowing HA won’t be as cheap as cream is..lol

What the!? My post got deleted because I said that I may have confused this news story for one on a certain site. This is getting even more immature and out of hand.

Anyway, I don’t know exactly where to top off news stories but I thought this might be semi-important news: http://www.siliconera.com/2010/08/23/sonic-pre-order-bonus-puts-the-hedgehog-in-the-warring-states-era/

Calm down, Edge.We just don’t mention that site anymore.

Thank you for your news tip, though.Much appreciated.

Homing attack works in some stages, even under water works to do a “micro boost”, but i think Segamust desactivate homming attack in “Boss stages”.

HA also kills your momentum in midair, so it’s faster to just jump on the badniks.
The only problem I have are the HA chains of bubbles.

I bet the homing attack will be made to be an integral part of the game and navigating levels, i.e. chaining it together to clear pits or reach higher routes. There’s a legitimate function to it, and not just a ‘Win button’. In one way, you could say the the spindash is a ‘Win button’, because it means that you don’t have to keep momentum just to clear certain parts of the stage. But I’m sure most people wouldn’t want the spindash taken out.

Ah well, I just wont use the HA then:)

Anyone wanna bet that he deliberately messed up during the boss battle just to try and prove his point?

I’m still not sold on this cheap knock-off, Webber.

If it make’s everything “Piss-easy” THEN DON’T F##KING USE IT!!!!!!!

Homing attack is fun.

Go away angry people.

@Espy: Depends on execution.

@ Brad

Sorry, I’m just tired of the drama between TSS and Fluffy Kittens. I understand why you don’t want to have anything to do with them though since you’ve tried to make peace.

@Kits’Okami

Why would he deliberately mess up when he didn’t show any footage? Flawed logic is flawed.

@ hook131

As much as I love the fact that the HA is in the game (I mean, S2 had the spin-dash and 3 had the jumping shield attack thing that I forgot the name of, so obviously 4 would have to add an attack), it’s difficult to not use it when you have to use it at certain points. That argument is ridiculous.

I actually dislike the fact that there’s a moment of “no control” after performing a homing attack. At least at the demo at SOS’ 10 this period of no control after the homing was too long, ironically making the controls feel very sticky. I don’t know how it’s been tweaked since then but control issues and enemy placement were my two main concerns for Sonic 4 and I hope these get sorted.

@Edge Yeah but we’ve had it since SA and no one thought it was too easy, now if it’s in STH4 they decide to ruin it by giving you no control after using it

I’m glad there is a balance to the HA.Hopefully this clears up a bit of the controversy surrounding the game.
