With the holiday season getting closer, fights over a “split fanbase” at a fever pitch and rationale in short supply, I’ve noticed something. Something unexpected. Something… colorful.
With the debut trailer of Colors and the critically abysmal state of the 3D Sonic titles, the initial reaction to Colors outside the ever-loyal echelon of the Sonic community (the “TrueSons”) was a resounding “god-effin’-damnit.” The track record of 3D Sonic games and the fact that Sonic 4 was coming out made it look like another rushed release in a cluttered SEGA schedule. It surely didn’t help when the full version of the game’s theme song was an atrocious assault on the ears with asinine vocals and lyrics. Despite SEGA’s track record and tendency to solicit butt-rock bands, Colors has been quietly outperforming SEGA’s jump on the retro bandwagon, the highly-anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. Gaming media outlets have rarely had anything negative to say about the upcoming 3D-title, even putting it higher on their wish list than Sonic 4.
I couldn’t believe it. Weren’t 3D Sonic games supposed to be rushed, poorly-designed, gimmicky affairs with an over-emphasis on speed, devoid of platforming?
One of my Facebook friends, reacting to the Colors debut trailer.Standard protocol for 3D Sonic since 2006.
Earlier this summer, when I was looking through GameTrailers’ “Best of E3 Awards,” I saw that they willingly left Sonic 4 out of the “Best Platformer” category due to a lack of polish. What? Most people outside of us curmudgeonly old fucks have been giving a free pass to Sonic 4 just for being “retro,” so I expected it to show up. They turned right around and nominated Sonic Colors, along with Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong Country Returns and LittleBigPlanet 2. Colors was standing toe-to-toe with triple-A titles.
I was convinced right then and there. Sonic Colors is looking fine and I want it.
Yeah, I know… I’m leaping into stage 1 of a certain cycle, something I’ve avoided with outright disdain for anything SEGA has tried to push on its fans. I feel different about Colors though. After reading up on the game’s premise a few months ago and watching every gameplay video out there, Colors is trying to follow Super Mario Galaxy‘s footsteps. A large majority of people made the connections from the start. Well, if SEGA is trying to emulate the second and third best games ever made, I have no problem. If calling to the experiences that Mario has had this generation fixes the ailments of present-day Sonic, then I’m all for it.
Though, it’s still kind of funny how shamelessly they are borrowing from Galaxy. Themed planets? Drill power-up? They are not even trying to hide it, which is probably why I don’t care. It works.
From a Sonic standpoint, Colors is looking like what everybody wanted: the Unleashed daytime levels with major adjustments (and a few subtle ones that I’ve been really appreciating). From the looks of it, the boost button is gone and relegated to a Wisp power-up (wow, I haven’t said “power-up” in regards to Sonic in a long time). The removal of boost also came with a slight reduction of Sonic’s normal speed, so I can actually play the game and see some of the best graphics the Wii has to offer. The transitions from 2D to 3D also seem a bit more natural and smooth, as Sonic glides from platforms to wacky grind rails. The way that SEGA utilizes the Z-axis to make Sonic weave in and out of scenery, while still remaining in 2D gameplay, is outstanding. It’s a beautiful thing. Reminds me of the great time I had playing Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
There’s no bullshit with this game either. No hub worlds, no Sun Medals… nothing to inhibit you from sheer platforming bliss. An actual pick up and play experience.
Power-Ups make a much needed return to Sonic games.
The gameplay of Sonic Colors is not the sole thing generating the positive vibes for this title. I haven’t seen a SEGA PR person talk up this game like, “the next big thing” or “the grand return of Sonic.” I’m not seeing that typical SEGA hyperbole with Sonic Colors. Colors is like Sonic 4′s chill older brother. The only press that I have seen talking up the game is SEGA’s Marcella Churchill saying that, “it’s what the fans have been asking for,” in regards to stripping Unleashed of the werehog and tightening up the daytime gameplay. Any way you look at it, you can’t go wrong with that statement.
SEGA PR isn’t off the hook, though. They always manage to screw up.
You guys know me. I’ve been around. I’ve got my hands in a fan project or two. I’m entrenched in Sonic 1, 2, 3&K and CD and haven’t enjoyed a whole lot since then. Highlights were sparse with Triple Trouble, Sonic R (<-lying here), Sonic Pocket Adventure, Sonic Advance, and Sonic Heroes (<-not lying here). One would not expect me to enjoy Sonic Colors, especially since Sonic 4 is coming out at the same time. Don’t tell that to SEGA West president Mike Hayes, though:
“We’ve got to make games that appeal to the 7-to-12-year-old, which is exactly what Colours will do, and then we need to appeal to the core gamer, which is what Sonic 4 is doing.”
Was that really necessary? Do you see Nintendo marketing Super Mario Galaxy to younger gamers and New Super Mario Bros. Wii to older gamers? No, because they appeal to all people. The sales certainly demonstrate that claim. Sonic has always been a character that appeals in that sense, too. He’s so appealing that he still has a fanbase after years of being average to downright awful (hey, I’m still here!). You don’t have to officially make a divide.
You also don’t have to keep saying, “this is Sonic 4 as you imagined it.” This statement doesn’t apply to all people. In fact, I bet it only applies to a minority of people. I know that it’s just silly PR, but come on. Sixteen years is a long time to imagine. Personally, my friends Euan and Joseph encapsulated my imagination back in 2007. With the constant physics issues of Sonic 4 (trust me, there are tons), it’s like asking for the Red Mega Man and getting “Ants in the Pants.” At least the public outcry is gradually fixing it.
I guess I’m not allowed to like Sonic Colors more than Sonic 4. SEGA said so.
I thought being rated “E” meant that it was for “Everyone.”
:/ okay I love sonic 4 AND sonic colors, I am a casual and core gamer at the same time as a guy who would rather pre-order a game than wait 15 weeks to get it -_-‘
you make a good point dude, and I respect that
and to south park reference: YOU GAVE MT YOUR STUPID ANTS IN THE PANTS???? THIS IS WHAT I THINK OF YOUR ANTS IN THE PANTS
Everyone, yes, but that basically means “for the kids”. Same way general audience movies are marketed towards kids, yet we can all get enjoyment out of it (such as any Pixar movie ever made). As is almost every Sonic game ever made, ESPECIALLY the classics.
Really, this is all marketing nonsense. SEGA has TWO Sonic games coming out in the span of a few months, and I’m sure the marketing department is worried about the two games competing with one another, especially since they both are on the Wii, Sonic’s most important console.
Besides, Iizuka already said in the TSS interview that the game is being made with older people in mind as well. Don’t let marketing nonsense get to ya :p.
And I’m with you for the rest of the article, which is incredibly well written by the way. I’m also anticipating Colors more then Sonic 4, or any other Sonic game in a long while for that matter. It’s good fun. But I caution you; the boost button isn’t “gone”. It just fills up through a different means: wisps instead of rings. There’s still LESS boosting and more platforming, but from what we’ve learned from Gamescom Sonic is apparently faster now then he was at E3.
“Everyone, yes, but that basically means ‘for the kids’.”
Yeah, I know that.I was making a play on the term.I just wanted to illustrate the hilarious state I find myself in, liking a new 3D Sonic game when something akin to the classics is also on the horizon.
Really good article. The future’s looking pretty bright for Sonic.
I think it would be funnier if Sega decided to up the ante with Sonic Colors and make it rated M like with Conker’s Bad Fur Day
Also I can understand where you are coming from dude. Sega really needs to watch they’re marketing and see what would be so bad as to make Sonic Colors marketed for 7-12 year olds?
Man I don’t even want to continue because your article is locked tight.
From what I’ve heard Sonic Colours is a greatly improved Sonic Unleashed, while Sonic 4 is Sonic rush with no boost bar and bad physics.
Roll on Sonic Colours, I can wait for Sonic 4 forever if I wanted.
ha………….. good south park referencebut sereusly i completely agree
As much as I love the classic titles, I’m not too pushed on Sonic 4 myself, maybe because I prefer the look of how Colours will feel.
The marketing department of Sega needs some fine tuning considering the age range in the fanbase.
Great article. I’m really glad to see that I’m not one of the only ones who anticipates Sonic Colors more than Sonic 4.
And what’s with the age range nonsense? Are we not allowed to enjoy Colors? Too bad, it looks really good.
Really good article as usual, only one minor thing.
The boost button still is there, but it’s really limited.
Still can’t believe I anticipate Colours more than 4.
Oh god do I hope for those physic changes.
If theirs an expert mode Ill go craping on the ceiling
Great article, I completely agree with it.
The boost button is still there, but when I played Sonic Colours at Gamescom, I rarely thought of using it.
If SEGA didn’t fuck Sonic 4 right up, then I’d be singing its praises at every given moment (much like how I berate Unleashed at every given moment. Fucking piece of shit). But Colours, so far, has done everything right. There’s not much not to like about the game and I couldn’t give two shits whether its aimed at kids if it’s THAT good a game. Much like Mario, except without all the repetition.
“If SEGA didn’t fuck Sonic 4 right up, then I’d be singing its praises at every given moment”
I wouldn’t be quite so quick to use the past tense on a game that hasn’t even been finished and released yet.
I’m sure Sega will make up for the stuff, by giving the TRUE Sonic fans something they’ll go ape-poopy over.
i hope purchasing a copy of sonic colors doesn’t make me look like a paedophile Sega
I’m gonna be purchasing both Sonic 4 AND Sonic Colors to satisfy two different aspects of my personality. Sonic 4 for the getting older and looking back on the nostalgia of the Genesis days of the 90s and Sonic Colors for feelin’ like a kid again. I think Sega’s doing a great job!
I’ve deleted half of the comments for going off-topic and/or being wildly incorrect. The comments in response to those posts are gone, too.
It made me a sad panda.
actually, i have been hyped for this gam more then sonic 4 for a while. Why would we all just change our minds after some website change their minds? Can’t you all decide for yourself and not just follow the crowd? I’ll play sonic colors if you do! Sonic 4, eh, its really just 5 new zones of a classic sonic genre. IDK, im tired of ranting to all of you why I like the 3d sonic games, Ill suck a werehog cock if you hate it so much, want some chocolate?
I’m not the entire website.I’m one person with one opinion. My opinion =/= the website’s opinion.
It’s not supposed to change people’s minds. You’re just supposed to read it.
Ah, my comment’s gone. Does that make me wildly incorrect, off topic or in reply to the previous? (coz I did reply to a now deleted comment).
Summary then. Sonic has had a bumby road in life but still I remain a dedicated but highly analytical and not character controlled person. Roll on Sonic 4 and Sonic Colours.
Zuel: In reply to previous. Thanks for trying to restore sense.
I have seen the light =]
Are you certain that’s the FULL version of that wonderful song? Anyway, I blame ESRB for making it look like E games are just for kids. I really don’t understand why they could never keep the K-A rating. Though really I don’t see that as a huge problem. What I do see as a problem is that they nominated classic games series like Kirby and Donkey Kong, but not Sonic 4 knowing almost every fanboy wants him to return to him to return to his old roots. I guess they played the unfinished product as well, but in fairness both games deserved to get nominated.
All the drama and controversy surrounding Sonic 4 in the fanbase makes me lose a little bit of interest in it
I’m still looking forward to it but Colors looks far more exciting and fresh to me
Also, I don’t care what the target audience for Colors is as long as the game is fun to play. There are tons of gameplay videos of grown adults who is flat out terrible at playing Colors and the game is aimed for kids in mind. So I guess that’s why SEGA has said that Colors is to appeal to kids so young kids can enjoy playing the game, too.
I’ll admit I was a little more excited for “Project Needlemouse” before it became “Sonic 4″. I’m just not excited for it anymore. I couldn’t tell you why. On the other hand, I’m totally psyched for Colors, and can’t wait for it to come out.
I think it may be that Sonic 4’s main goal is “to be just like the original games” whereas Sonic Colors’ main goal is “to be fun in general”. …Though I’m not sure why they have such trouble doing both.
Great article, though. Really hit the mark.
Ah, fuck it. I may as well preorder it and put it to rest until November or so. I saw the Sonic hat at FYE today and it didn’t look too bad. Whatever.
Oh, wait, this isn’t about the Sonic hat? Too bad. Both games look good, and I’ll probably grab them in spite of everything and realize they’re good games, or better or worse. Here’s hoping some expectations are exceeded.
both Games are shaping up nicely and I am glad!
Slinger’s articles are awesome.
I’m probably looking forward to Colours more than 4 too actually, it just looks so… good!
I have to say, I’m more excited for Colors too, yet, something get’s me…it’s just funny how everyone wanted a ‘classic’ Sonic game, and they get one, yet, now they look forward to a 3D game which, a lot of people say are the worst. (I’m not one of those people)
@HeroInferno – “From what I’ve heard Sonic Colours is a greatly improved Sonic Unleashed, while Sonic 4 is Sonic rush with no boost bar and bad physics.”
Didn’t Sega said that they’ve fixed the physics and most of the other problems in their latest blog on Sonic 4? Also, Sonic 4 has actual platforming like the old games while the Sonic Rush games are mostly speedy with little platforming. Sonic 4 might be developed by Dimps who’ve also made the Rush titles but that doesn’t mean they play alike
I agree with whoever said there should be an expert mode in Colors. Besides that, the game looks fun. Why cant the industry realize that kids look up to their teenaged older brothers and if they like a hardcore sonic game then so will the young crowd. So i wont be surprised if you see 6 and 7 year olds loving sonic 4 even tho they dont know know sonic retro history. Because sonic was always meant to appeal to all ages at the same time and for that reason sonic 4 will probably sell more than colors even if colors is a better game. But heres hoping for a “hard mode” colors anyway.
Great article btw
I love this article. U couldn’t say it any better Brad. I’m still anxious for Sonic 4, even if Sega did fix the physics, it’s still not the sonic 4 i imagined http://www.bingegamer.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Sonic-4-Title-Screen.jpg
I gotta agree with Hamilton- I think part of it is that there’s so much focus on the games having an age rating in the first place. Granted there’s a reason they exist however…
Things is, nowadays the grand majority of the games associated with the modern gaming age term “hardcore” is either T or M. Far and few between are there exceptions made for any E games. Also before hand, K-A rated games seemed to be considered a step-up from E games (which they could’ve been E altogether anyway because despite some…boundaries pushed they really weren’t any different, but E games seemed to stereotypically follow a younger audience than K-A).
It seems like as Mature games started to become more prominent within the industry and the K-A rating…basically becoming extinct, it’s like people forgot that you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy E rated games. At the same time, it’s like people forgot that a game doesn’t have to be T or M for it to be good…let alone decent.
Lately that’s slowly being proven otherwise, but not on a regular enough basis. For the most part, aside from Mario and…just about anything that takes off with mainstream Nintendo and the creators of Little Big Planet (on a small scale at least)- has more or less overshadowed anything else that’s kid friendly and decent (enough to where the hardcore don’t feel ashamed to say they play it).
So I guess another thing is the whole… “who’s a better gamer than who” mentality with all the acheivements and ego boosters n what not.
Just a thought.
@Dreadknux: Sonic and the Black Knight.
WE’RE GONNA REEEEEEEACH FOR THE STAAAAAARS TONIIIIIIIGHT!
What? It had to be said.
What Black Knight have to do with Sonic 4? Nothing.
I recall people hating Sonic Colors before we saw more. There is nothing about Sonic 4 to indicate it’s going to be a BAD game. I’ve played it myself and it’s a heck of a lot better then Black Knight ever would have been.
This just made my day… I dunno how, or why, but I’ve not been excited for Sonic Colors… I guess I just needed a reason, and this article gave me one. Thank you
In response to the article… all I have to say is that I agree wholeheartedly. What happened to Sonic games being made to appeal to EVERYONE? Just because many ‘classic fans are adults now doesn’t automatically mean they don’t still like the modern games… nor does it mean that ‘modern fans’ are all children.
To be honest, I find it kind of insulting that my favorite games are now being aimed primarily at six to 12 year olds. I have nothing against that age group, it’s just that I want it to appeal to ME, too. Sonic used to be timeless, ageless. :/
Sonic XG was never finished was it? :-/ Too bad, the demo is fun..
Sorry, but what was Sonic Heroes intended for? Eighteen year olds? How about the Adventure games? Sonic Color’s older brother, Sonic Unleashed? Or ANY Sonic game?
The seven to twelve audience fits all of the above; that doesn’t mean us oldies can’t or won’t enjoy them as well. Unless they’re in the Storybook series.
I highly doubt Sega designs any Sonic game with a specific audience in mind; pretty much everytitle I’ve ever picked up (with the occasional exception, an example being Schoolhouse) has certainly sported universal appeal.
Seriously, every time someone from Sega opens his or her mouth, the waste hits the fan. Ignore it.
^That’s the smartest comment I’ve read on here.
I was going to buy the game anyway regardless what the age audience is.
Sonic Colors can go suck it.
Sonic 4 is Sega’s last chance to prove the Hedgehog is not dead.
Why just Sonic 4 as Sonic’s last chance when there’s also Colors for the DS and Wii? Don’t you want them to succeed, too?
I’ll laugh if Colors turns out to be the better game.
