Damizean Unveils the “Egg Engine”

YouTube Preview Image

Damizean and I have been buds for a while.  I usually see everything he does before it goes public.  I have been waiting for him to go public on this engine for quite some time (aka “years”) and now it’s finally here!  What is the “Egg Engine?”  Here’s Damizean to detail this early build for us:

Some time ago I released a small test level of a 2.5D unleashed style engine. I’ve been making some progress with it out of boredom, and here are some of the early results. I may release the engine with the a few more features on September.

· Classic game physics – 2.5D Unleashed style paths.
· Classic camera with 2D mode included.
· Fully configurable character system (still got to make menus to select them though).
· Basic actions: Jumping, braking, rolling & spindash.
· Lightmapped geometry support.
· New particle system for special effects. You can see it in action with the stars effect.

While most of the animations still need work, that running animation is rad.  So, so rad.  The main attraction of the “Egg Engine,” though, is the rolling physics. Like in the Genesis games, if you fall onto a curve and go into a roll in the “Egg Engine,” you’ll immediately kick into high gear.  Watch him work that half-pipe!

To contrast: in games like Sonic Rivals or the upcoming Sonic 4 (based off my hands-on time and video watching), rolling doesn’t seem to function well at all.  “Anemic” is a pretty good word to describe it.  How do you slow down when rolling down a hill?  How does one of Sonic’s hallmark moves get shafted like that?  Look at how worthless the spindash is in this clip.  Protip, Dimps: resistance to Sonic’s speed/momentum is variable depending on the slope and is not a fixed value.

I’m happy to see rolling functioning well here and look forward to the engine’s full release.

Damizean, for those of you who are unfamiliar with his work, is responsible for bringing 360-degree Sonic engines to fangamers on many mediums, like Multimedia Fusion and Game Maker.  His last big splash was the Sonic 360/Sonic Blitz engine that put actual physics in a 3D Sonic environment.  Basically, if you’re making a Sonic fangame, Damizean more than likely made the engine.

For that, we salute him.

  1. This looks incredible, I can’t wait to try it out

  2. Thats amazing. Will this be a full game or just the engine in development?

  3. It’ll be an engine that will be released for others to make a game out of it.

  4. And SEGA/ DIMPS couldn’t do this for Sonic 4 – why? :)

  5. It’s amazing that SEGA are doing so badly with Sonic, That fan games are doing better then them!

  6. But don’t get me wrong I love Sonic games

  7. @hook131:

We should all call SEGA and tell them to dump their entire production staff and hire fangame-makers instead.

SEGA obviously haven’t got a single mite of skill anymore.

  8. What do you guys consider to be the best fan made game?

  9. Love the model, hate the sound effects, the physics need a little more work, otherwise perfect.

  10. Sega should hire this guy

  11. The engine looks good.
    The Sonic model looks awful.
The sound effects are horrid (like all the sound in Sonic CD!)

I seriously loathe all these comments on here saying that SEGA has no talent. Why the hell are you even on this site?

  12. epic! :D

  13. SEGA needs to hire that guy, those animations are great, especially full speed running and the ball turning into an oval shape at higher speed.
Like Kit’Okami, i have to agree the sound isn’t great, i hate the jumping noise from Sonic CD.

  14. Huh this guy made also the blitzengine? Wow really talented dude there.
The rolling physics are top-notch, by far the most important thing in a Sonic engine but the rest looks until now a bit iffy, but it sure has a lot of promise.
Also why do many people forget that Sega has other cool franchises and not only Sonic?
I can understand and agree to most of the complaints of Sonic 4 nowadays, but just because of that saying “$3G@ sukx” is a bit harsh.

  15. Maybe so, but Sonic is Sega’s mascot. He represents them and fans will closely tie his quality with the whole of the company. If Sonic fails the fans will see it as Sega failing since some Sonic fans have little interest in other games besides Sonic when it comes to Sega anyway.

  16. @Monty: That is very true. If I think about it am a fan of Sonic, not Sega. I enjoy games from a wide range of publishers, Capcom, Konami etc… But only Sonic has me as a fan. I like Megaman, but couldnt care less if somthing happened to him. But Id go nuts if I couldnt play Sonic 2 or worse, something happend to my collection of Sonic stuff.

  17. Isn’t SEGA basically doing this with Sonic 4 but better?

  18. @ Hamilton
Well the E3 build physics aren’t classic more rush-like , so let’s hope this problem is fixed in the final build.

  19. “Isn’t SEGA basically doing this with Sonic 4 but better?”

    You are a funny guy.

  20. wheels-of-feet animation looks better than Sonic 4′s. I mean.. they did wheels-of-feet in the Adventure series too just with his hands back to look cooler. It looking more realistic and many ppl not noticing it from side angles may have overlooked it, which is probably why Sonic X considered them seperate running animations.. and the rest of the games followed Sonic X’s influence too tightly. =(

But the rolling could be faster spinning-wise (particularly the spin-dash)

As for the model, it may be classic but it doesn’t look very different from our current Sonic. lol (well except the hair isn’t so damn long, but that’s only in a few games where they screw over his design as super tall and skinny. Otherwise, Unleashed, Colors and the Adventure series look very similar to this. It’s the exaggeration of their artwork that look extremely different, both both of those look good at least)

    Pretty good tho! ^___^

  21. Lieutenant Goomba says:

    @Hamilton

    Exactly.

  22. @Edge(Sega Fanboy) calm down dude just becuz a test level engine looks better then sonic 4(what sega did) doesnt mean you have to freak out its not like any other fans surpassed dimps and sonic team(oh wait they did)
@Everybody Else stop complaining this is only a test level engine seriously this is to showcase the physics nothing else got that im sure he’ll improve the animations and stuff later i mean just imagine this guy working on sonic 4 we’d have a freaking masterpiece in other words:He + High Budget Resources=Amazing Wonderful Sonic Game

  23. “its not like any other fans surpassed dimps and sonic team(oh wait they did)”

Not really. Maybe reached their level, but not surpass.

“stop complaining this is only a test level engine seriously this is to showcase the physics nothing else got that im sure he’ll improve the animations and stuff later”

I could say the same thing about Sonic 4. Both it and this game are unfinished products.

  24. @ Hamilton
    Amen to that.

  25. SonicSilverSS says:

I have to agree with Hamilton, Sonic 4 looks better.

  26. “Not really. Maybe reached their level, but not surpass.”

I know something you don’t know!

  27. The point isn’t how it looks in comparison to Sonic 4… it’s how it plays. In my opinion, if SEGA’s going to make a true sequel to the older Sonic games the least they can do is be consistent with the physics of all things. Seriously, if Sonic 4 was released years ago in a time frame relative to 1, 2, 3&K and played how Dimps is currently making it the sheer amount of WTF from fans would probably be enough to part the seas. What if the range and speed of execution for every move in your favorite fighting game was suddenly dropped and reworked beyond recognition… or the bullet speed, reload time, and weight of your weapon’s effect on movement in your favorite FPS was changed out of nowhere in a way that totally contradicts actual physics. It would feel like you’re playing a totally different game. It’s the same deal here. And we don’t want a totally different Sonic game. Not when we were promised something that’s in line with what we knew and loved years ago. Did you see the link Brad posted showing that spin dash? The dood playing had to try over and over and over again just to do what Damizean’s engine allowed in ONE SHOT… what Sonic 2 would allow in ONE SHOT… what Sonic 3 and Knuckles would allow in ONE STUPID EASY SHOT. And THAT… is heartbreaking. We aren’t asking for a revolution. We aren’t asking for a ground up rebuilding. All we want is something that’s ALREADY BEEN DONE 4 TIMES OVER. What in the world is so hard about that??? At this rate we’ll never know the answer. All we can do is hope that by some miracle between now and release Sega stumbles across TSS, sees this video, and jumps through hoops of fire to hire the creator. Because this man knows what he’s doing.

*sorry for the rant. kind of upset here. thanks for this glimpse of greener grass, Brad. up up and awaayyyyy*

  28. @ Brad:
You seem to forget Advance 1 and Pocket Adventure.
    Those were awesome games.

  29. Ethan Kerr says:

    Epic win, there, Dami.

  30. @Hamilton yeah you keep thinking that

  31. @SonicSilverSS how can you compare Test Beta Level(this video above) with sonic 4 it cant be compared cuz this is merely a level to showcase the physics and they got it right sega didnt you’re really stupid sega has alot of money to do a game but this guy did it without money
Hell Sega should hire this guy
As i said before:Damizean + Resources + maybe hire the rest of the sonicretro staff to assist him=Amazing Sonic 4
Come on guys dont be blind its obvious fans are better then rookie developers like Dimps or the New Sonic Team
Its time to face the music fanboys

  32. rhonddaboy13 says:

no offence but it reminds me a bit of little big planet

  33. Inferno the Fox says:

    @ Umiyuri

    Seriously!

If Damizean doesn’t get hired by Sonic Team, I’m dropping all my hope in Sonic.

  34. @rhonddaboy13 thats cuz the camera is too closed-up give it a try when he releases the engine it will have zoom-out cameras and lots of features and the physics are really close to the classics here

  35. Eh, it looks alright. Not really something I’d consider going all gushy over, though.

  36. Soniman032 says:

    @Shoryuken
Yeah Ede is totally a Sega fanboy beacuse he likes Sonic Amirte?

    @Brad Flick
Yeahits toally funny that he thinks Sonic 4 will be better than this?

Its always the same shit, a fangame comes out and looks decent, then people say dumb**** like “OMG WHY CANT SEGA DO THIS THEY SUCKS!!! BAWWW”

he stupidity of this fanbase never cease to amaze

  37. I’m pretty sure that you’re not stupid to create something like this. Since the values are true to the originals, it’s easy to see why people get excited to see something of this caliber.

Considering that there are guides to replicate the physics written by fans, I don’t see why SEGA doesn’t use it.

I have played Sonic 4. The rolling physics and spindash are garbage. You might as well just homing attack over and over to gain speed. Everything else? Improved from the PartnerNET leak that I also played. They’re almost there when it comes to fixing Sonic 4′s physics.

  38. @Umiyuri

yep, i’ll call and complain now!
    XD LOL……

    jk

  39. SonicSilverSS says:

    @Shoeyuken
…So, just because I think Sonic 4 is better, means I’m a fanboy? Yeah okay…how about this, I’m not picky…Sonic 4 looks good, therefore I’ll play it, not to complain. Unlike people like you, who will complain over very small details. Shoryuken, get over yourself, and stop hitting on those who like other games, alone. People have opinions, now you need to respect them.

  40. I hope this time the engine would be programmed with dying, rings, scores, level progression and endings.

I’m tired of seeing really bad blitzsonic levels on youtube

  41. “I have played Sonic 4. The rolling physics and spindash are garbage.”

Might that have been the E3 build? Again I refer you to the final version.

“how can you compare Test Beta Level(this video above) with sonic 4 it cant be compared cuz this is merely a level to showcase the physics and they got it right sega didnt”

    E3 build.

“you’re really stupid sega has alot of money to do a game”

WOW. Really? I never would have guessed. Next you’re going to tell us that the games they make are from computers

“but this guy did it without money”

    Your point?

“Hell Sega should hire this guy”

    SEGA doesn’t hire fanboys.

“As i said before:Damizean + Resources + maybe hire the rest of the sonicretro staff to assist him=Amazing Sonic 4″

Like we need more games from retro Sonic whores.

“Come on guys dont be blind its obvious fans are better then rookie developers like Dimps or the New Sonic Team”

Bullshit. Dimps and Sonic Team have had more experience with video game development than any “fan” has.

“Its time to face the music fanboys”

You are in no position to call ANYONE a fanboy.

  42. “Might that have been the E3 build? Again I refer you to the final version.”

Until I see it changed, it’s a problem that’s worth discussing. They’re watching us, they’ve been taking fan feedback. If they see this video and read the comments in reply to it, maybe it gets changed for the final build. If they do not know that the rolling isn’t well done, then it doesn’t get changed, let alone considered.

Plus, it’s impossible to “refer” me to something that doesn’t exist. Nice try, son. You’ll get ‘em next time. Or not.
    -
    “SEGA doesn’t hire fanboys.”

I reiterate something that I said to you earlier: I know something you don’t know!
    -
“Dimps and Sonic Team have had more experience with video game development than any “fan” has.”

Wrong. Some fans have been programming and hacking since long before Dimps developed a Sonic game. Damizean being one of those people.
    -
“Like we need more games from retro Sonic whores.”

Without retro Sonic, you don’t build a franchise up to even survive to this point today. If those early games aren’t successful, you just have another Zool, Sparkster, Socket or Bubsy. A failed character. Pardon me if us “whores” like to play good games. We’ll take that into consideration next time.

Good to see that we have another champion in our midst here in the TSS comments section with Hamilton. Got anymore inane rumblings of yours for me to break-down, champ?

  43. SonicSilverSS says:

    @Brad
Ok…first off, WE GET THAT WE WOULDN’T HAVE SONIC TODAY IF IT WERN’T FOR ‘RETRO SONIC’…good lord, people…but, some people like the new better. That doesn’t make them any less of a person now does it? No, everyone has different taste in games, some like old better, some like new better…it’s all a matter of opinion…so, instead of hitting on someone for a different opinion…why don’t you just keep stuff to yourself, hm? And about Sonic 4…they are fixing it, okay? Give it a rest, and wait till the game comes out…you don’t know everything…you might, ‘know something you don’t!”, but that give you the right to use that and just go at people, like you have been.

  44. That’s right, I don’t know everything. However, circumstances over the past two years has led to me knowing a lot of things that you don’t know. Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to talk about them. Wouldn’t want to violate a certain piece of paper.

“so, instead of hitting on someone for a different opinion…”

I guess you missed the part where he called me a “whore” for having a different opinion. I didn’t call anybody a name; I just gave my opinion. I guess that doesn’t cross your mind because he agrees with you, right?

I respect an opposing viewpoint when it’s informed. I rag on those that aren’t. Unfortunately, a lot of “walls of text” in TSS comments are of the latter variety.

I wasn’t even talking about “new-school games” here. I was talking about the rolling physics in a game that is designed to be “old-school” compared to this fan-made engine. Although, every post devolves into this argument eventually. A cool piece of fan art has turned into a fight about old vs. new. Fan art. Good game.

  45. SonicSilverSS says:

Yes, well, I don’t agree with the…ahem…’whore’ part, not big on cursing/ er…that stuff, but just because he says that, doesn’t mean you need to go and do it too. And, the whole knowing stuff…I think we all get it,t hat you know stuff, but that doesn’t mean you need to bring it up all the time…almost liek your bragging that you have a ‘relationship’ with SEGA. There’s a difference between informed and opinion, if a ‘wall of text’ is opinionated, then, it’s not wrong. Unless it says something, like ‘Sonic 1 came out in 1987!”…now that is informed. However, I do understand where you’re coming from, despite having an opposing viewpoint.

  46. SonicSilverSS says:

And, Sonic 4 is technically old school…with new school graphics, and the Homing Attack…so…

  47. “Until I see it changed, it’s a problem that’s worth discussing.”

I could say the same for the fan game.

“They’re watching us, they’ve been taking fan feedback. If they see this video and read the comments in reply to it, maybe it gets changed for the final build. If they do not know that the rolling isn’t well done, then it doesn’t get changed, let alone considered.”

    Again it’s an E3 build.

“Plus, it’s impossible to “refer” me to something that doesn’t exist. Nice try, son. You’ll get ‘em next time. Or not.”

“I could say the same thing about Sonic 4. Both it and this game are unfinished products.”

“Wrong. Some fans have been programming and hacking since long before Dimps developed a Sonic game. Damizean being one of those people.”

But he doesn’t own his own company full of professionals now does he?

“Without retro Sonic, you don’t build a franchise up to even survive to this point today. If those early games aren’t successful, you just have another Zool, Sparkster, Socket or Bubsy. A failed character. Pardon me if us “whores” like to play good games. We’ll take that into consideration next time.”

It’s good you respect the old series, but bitching about the new games being different and not the same while only praising the old games is only hurting your image as a Sonic fan.

“Good to see that we have another champion in our midst here in the TSS comments section with Hamilton. Got anymore inane rumblings of yours for me to break-down, champ?

Why even bother? You’ll probably just erase my comments and disable commenting all together like before until I start hating the new Sonic games which I never will.

  48. “Again it’s an E3 build.”

I refer you to the comment that you quoted to say this again. Endless loop.
    -
“But he doesn’t own his own company full of professionals now does he?”

He doesn’t need to have one if he can do it by himself on no money. The amount of people and/or money don’t make good games. Talent does. Remember, a “company full of professionals” produced the likes of Sonic 06 and Sonic 1 for the GBA. Two random dudes made “World of Goo” in Wi-Fi enabled coffee shops.
    -
“I could say the same thing about Sonic 4. Both it and this game are unfinished products.”

True, I will concede that. However, one has got something the other has got: rolling physics, something that his been identified with this character since his inception. If you read anything up there, I talked about fixed vs. variable values.
    -
“It’s good you respect the old series, but bitching about the new games being different and not the same while only praising the old games is only hurting your image as a Sonic fan. ”

Game’s called “Sonic 4.” Return to the old-school series. It’s “Sonic 4 as we imagined it.” If they want to make an old school game, I’m pointing out the flaws. If I was apathetic or didn’t give a shit about Sonic, I wouldn’t even bother.
    -
“only praising the old games is only hurting your image as a Sonic fan.”

This made me laugh. I’m pretty sure everybody knows what my image is and it’s this.
    -
“Why even bother? You’ll probably just erase my comments and disable commenting all together like before until I start hating the new Sonic games which I never will.”

I locked that one because it was about FAN ART and you were talking about something unrelated to said FAN ART. That’s not moderating because I disagree with you. That’s moderating because you were OFF-TOPIC. There’s a difference. This thread is remaining open because the discussion on-topic. I’m not here to change your opinion. I’m debating it.

  49. Jackskellinghog says:

If a reply utilising the hedgehog engine of half a brain comes up, do tell me. These shitfests are what’s keeping me from ever taking this site seriously.

  50. I’ll keep you posted, Tom. Hahaha…

  51. I’m not sure about the S part. Sonic should be ejected when he reaches the leftest part of the S, not stick on the road. What if he stops upside down? will he stick to the ceiling like a bat? and inverted gravity to allow for inverted jumps?

    Otherwise, great engine!
